It was for the genesis. I had verious different modes, pirate, murchant, explorer
you could sail all the seas of the world in this came.

There was a game I played on an apple II back in the 1980's called Taipan that fits what you described also there is a game that I've recently played on my computer called Sid Meier's Pirates that sounds like what your referring to.

I used to play one called 1612 ...had another name with it, might have even been pirates of(or on)the Caribbean. you sailed around the Caribbean sea attacking other ships, towns, and military outposts, was pretty fun game. Think you could be like french, English, Spanish, or dutch. This was for the original console system BTW, if that's what your referring too, not sure what console your talking though.
