I'm trying to get my wife '91 ford escort sw on the road again. Recently the old starter broke and a new one was installed. The car didn't start nor crank, so I posted a question asking for help. Just to be sure, I took out the starter and test it again, hoping it was bad. Couple users recommended I checked the starter relay and the neutral safety switch, but it's an automatic transmission. The battery is charged. What I'm doing wrong?

The starter is new and includes the solenoid. To test the battery I took it out and use the one that's currently on my car with no luck. What is the parking sensor?

First of all, how did you conclude your battery to be bad? Did you check it with a DVOM? Are you getting the full 12 volts to the starter? Have you verified the 's' terminal is 'hot' with the key in the 'CRANK' position (it may take two people for this)?

Take a look at your cables. Cables don't last forever. You replaced the starter but the problem could be in the old oxidized cables not carrying enough current to turn the starter! Another weak spot is replacement battery terminal cable ends, the ones that bolt on with a metal strap to replace the original molded on cable ends. Those are bound to fail after a short time. It is always better to install new cables. Just look at the cables, any copper showing should look like copper not just dull brown, and the casing shouldn't be all cracked. Do you have good cables?

try a couple of simple things, first put a socket and ratchet on the bolt that holds on the harmonic balancer and see if the engine will turn over if not check for seized accessories (alt.,p.s.pump,air comp) a good source of info could be obtained in a cheap Chilton or equivalent manual

You replaced the motor, did you replace the solinoid?

The solinoid is what pushes the gear the motor is connected to into the flywheel to turn over the engine.

I'd bet money that's the problem.
