Not when they were old, but you know, after 20 years old. Most of the greats that I love (Dave Lombardo, Chris Adler, etc.) seem to have started when they were really young. I wonder if it is possible to become a really good drummer with a late start or if there is some kind of internal rhythm that is solidified during formative years...

I think it's possible but unlikely. When you're a kid you have the time to devote yourself to becoming great. Most adults have so many other things going on that they don't have the time or energy to practicing hour after hour like most kids do. It will take years of dedicated practicing to become a natural.

Yes.There is a pretty famous nashville studio drummer(can't remember his name) that started when he was 28! and to become a studio drummer you need to be on it! It just takes practice.and the right kind of practice. a good instructor would help alot.work on technique slowly and accuratley.One seemingly boring exercise could take you to a higher level of playing.
