He deserves it. He's that popular. However, his guaranteed salary over 5 years is only $50 million. The bulk of his income will come from image rights, which previously he shared with Real Madrid.
Check out the link to the article that includes this question and answer:
1. Is Beckham's contract with the Galaxy really worth the reported $250 million?
No, and it's not even close. Leiweke refused to discuss the details of Beckham's deal, but league sources confirmed that Beckham's guaranteed salary will be around $50 million over the entire five-year length of the contract. That's hardly chump change, but it's still less than the salaries of a lot of U.S. sports stars.

Apparently no one understands that Beckham's 5 year contract for playing is only 27.5 for 5 years. Yes, he attracts a lot of media attention he always has, just like Cristiano Ronaldo! They get paid endorsement money from many, many sources. magazines, tv shows, clothing lines, cars, shoes, etc... just as long as their name sells, no one really knows for sure how much other players are making, I'm sure it's a lot too! But If they are gorgeous of course they get more offers. I'm happy for him! it's good that football players get attention, especially in the usa!

i dont think anyone is worth 250 million just to play a football game. Give me a break that money could help children and elderly or go to help the reserch for illnesses

hes a good player and probably worth that much but i dont know if it was a smart move for a mls team to buy him since americans dont really appreciate football (soccer). its just wierd how many americans dont like the sport and they talk crap about it when it is the biggest sport in the world.... but yeah it would have been a good move for a european team to buy him but im not sure about the LA Galaxy...

Just to keep you informed, his contract with the L.A Galaxy is for 27.5 million. The rest of the earlier reported money has to do with endorsements, incentives, and proceeds from Jersey sales among other things.

Absolutely not worth 250mil as a footballer.
BUT definitely more than that from merchandise and spin-offs. You see, football clubs are willing to pay that obscene amount as wages because they know that the money they generate off the pitch is far better than on it.
In finance jargon, it's ROI.

he's not even the best soccer player out there...but he's definetely the most marketable and that's what counts.
i think him playing in america will cause a stir but not to the point where most of america will now include soccer as a must watch sporting event. especially after the novelty wears out and if he and his team doesnt win.
