The 1943 cent is actually zinc coated steel. The mintage for the Philadelphia mint was 684,628,670, for Denver 217,660,000 and San Francisco 191,550,000. So you see they are not scarce. Most were saved anyway for they looked different. Millions have been re-plated to look better, but the wear still shows under the coating. They are worth only a little ( 02-25 cents) unless they are uncirculated then the value is only a few dollars. However unknown to a lot of people there is a 1943-D with a boldly doubled mint mark, that brings a higher price. It is worth somewhere between $5 and $50.00 depending on it's grade. You do have an historic item, it came about due to copper being needed for shell casings, during world war II. Not all neat historic items have great value and that in a way, is nice for us collectors, that are not rich.
