If they close the door all the way, they can go out the rear emergency door.

Depends on the type of door.

If the door is manual with the old style handle that the driver cranks around then they just leave the handle off the full shut position, close the door and lock it from the outside, there will be a small handle or indentation so they can unlock it and pull it open when they return.

On some busses there is button connected to a rod that goes through the front of the bus that you push to move the crank off the full shut position.

For an automatic electric or pneumatic door there will be a button near the door or on the front of the bus. If the powered systems fail I believe the pressure can be relieved and the door still opened by hand.

Depends on the bus. On a Greyhound you slam the door from the outside, which locks it. To re-open the door, you push in on a chrome-plated steel rod that sticks out of the front of the bus just below the passenger side of the windshield about three inches. This rod is about 5/8" in diameter and has a hole drilled through it sideways so that you can thread a padlock through it and keep anyone from opening the door.

On many school buses they did indeed keep the door unlatched just a bit so it could be opened from the outside, but there would also have to be some arrangement to force open the door if some kid went crazy and locked himself in.

on a greyhound bus the switch just left of the door. some have a flap some don't. their is two levers one is for the door the other one is for the step or for the bus to kneel. if you ever ride a greyhound bus if you look down by the driver right leg there is a red lever if you push that down it will release all the air from the door and you can just push the door open
