It partitions the hard drive into 2 or more virtual hard drives. They will show up on My Computer as C:, D:, E:, as many partitions you make. They will work as if they are actual hard drives. You can run WIndows on one and run Linux on another, if you want. As many operating systems as hard drives. I use one partitions just for photo saving. It makes keeping the hard drive easier to maintain as far as defragmentation, etc.
