Smoking is contributed as a nicotine addiction, and an oral habit. For those that have one or the other, its just difficult to quit. You can tell which one you have by two tests, if its a nicotine addiction you could easily deal with the gum or dip. If its oral, you will find that you associate many things with smoking, such as any time you drive, or the times of the day while you are working, etc. For example, smoking every two hours while at work. Or smoking twice in your car on your way to work and on the way back home. This one can be given up by cutting back 1 ciggarette every other day until you dont smoke any more.
Now if its both, then you are pretty bad off, but not screwed completly. Try using both methods of quitting, this is the best success you will have. Like try going as long as possible by just using the gum or patch or dip, then when you get that hankering for a cigg in your mouth, thats when you would use the cutting a cigg every other day.
But the reason why its so hard either way is because a habit is hard to break because your brain is telling you subconsiously that its okay to do it. This way you dont feel guilt for it, I mean most people only say they are going to quit or they shouldnt be smoking, while they are indeed smoking a ciggarette. But do they put it out, no. Because their brain says its okay. As for the addiction part of it all, its the fact that at first it made you feel good, maybe releiving stress or helping you relax. Then the tar buildup from the smoke clings to the inner parts of your lungs as well as your bronchial tube. Which is what gets the nicotine into your blood stream. Once an outside source is introduced into your blood stream it will either be rejected or accepted.

It's not a habit, but an addiction. Your body has gotten used to the chemicals and nicotine inside the cigarettes that it tricks itself into believing that in order to survive, you must keep smoking. The nicotine has gotten into your bloodstream, so the body has gotten used blood infected with nicotine getting fed to each part of the body. When the nicotine in the blood dwindles, the body parts getting the "deprived" blood sends signals tricking you into believing you must have a cigarette.

It's an addiction that will never truly go away (willpower to avoid taking it up again but it will always be there no matter what).
And by the way, I'm not sure why smokers receive such disgust from society (what about alcohol, drugs, fatty foods etc., if you don't see their harmful outcomes, does it mean its okay then).
They are all addictive and harmful, but so is a greasy burger and chocolate. You can try to stop, but the craving is always there.

Yup. I'de agree with the first answer. When you smoke, you're body adapts to it. So if you stop, you go through withdrawl, when you're body now NEEDS that substance. so perhaps you might start again.
