Key word is MAME and (command line).

Answers to your 3 questions:

1) Some roms are bootlegs of other roms, what does that mean?

(A) Yes roms are the Chips found on the vintage type games found in the Game rooms around the world. Atari, Neo Geo, and Nintendo for example used cartridges that had a chip or so inside of them. As hackers were able to extract the information and copy it.They would rewrite some of the code to rename the game from say "Pac Man" to "puck man". Also they may have changed the game play, by adding more lives, creating new characters, or changing the speed of the game. Roms extracted and saved without altering them are just called the games name.

2) What are the differences?

(A) The difference is an original game found in the arcades in most parts of the world, or. Hacked games found in not so ligit countries, for instance.

3) How do I use them?

(A) I'm not a Command Line MAME person but here is a link if thats which MAME version you want to use and ask on the boards: http://www.mame.net/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/wwwthreads.pl?action=list&Board=mamegeneral

ROM is the short hand way of saying read-only memory. These are not CD images and can only be derived from cartridge games (Sega Genesis, SNES, etc.) IF you have a ROM bootleg, that only means that it was copied. Your emulator needs to suit the ROM you are trying to start up. For example, a Genesis Emulator will play Genesis games.

To use them, there are usually directions that tell you to put all the ROMS in a specific folder. Read your README.TXT file that came with your emulator to find this.
