Yes, it is not a well know or perhaps even hidden fact Indians did at time rescue slaves and accepted them into their tribes. Sometimes as slaves but a lot were accepted into the tribes and were treated as family members!

I am a Native woman. I know this history as well. Because at that time Native nations were independent from the U.S. government the slaverly laws didn't apply on Native land. So if a slave could get to Native land then he would be free as long as he stayed there. If he left then he risked be "recaptured" because this was done even for free men. Natives understood this and would help out slaves and allow them to live on Native land and be part of the community.
Unfortunately some Natives also had slaves. I don't know much about the history of this.
To find out more information go to the nearest college or university and talk with an ethnic studies teacher. Someone who specializes in African American history or Native American history should be able to help you.

Oh and if you find out anything interesting and remember give me an email. I'd be interested to learn more.

You should try calling museums that specifically focus on Native Americans. Just do a google search for museums and look up their numbers. They can give you more information about it, and tell you exactly what books or other sources that will help you.

Uh...right. I don't believe they played any significant role in freeing the slaves.
