Since you mentioned living in a hotel near mall, I will presume you want somewhere with a good shopping experience in Malaysia. You can definitely experience the essence of Malaysia Truly Asia in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.
If you are going to Kuala Lumpur, I would recommend Boulevard Hotel as it is only about RM230 nett (~USD 65) per room night. It is right above one of the largest mall in Malaysia, Mid Valley Megamall, and is much newer than Cititel Mid Valley (as it is only opened in 2006) You can take the KTM komuter train to reach all the major destinations in Kuala Lumpur, including KL sentral which offers transport services to the KLIA airport.
Added: Since you mentioned beach and resort, then you should make a trip to the northern Malaysia. You can enjoy good beaches at Penang, Langkawi or Pangkor island. I suggest you do all your shopping in Kuala Lumpur, then go to Pangkor Island Beach Resort for a soothing beach holiday. This will be cheaper than going to Langkawi, and you should try the villa here. You can reach Pangkor island via Berjaya Air from Subang Airport near Kuala Lumpur. By the way, both Boulevard hotel and Pangkor Island Beach Resort are owned by the same owner - IGB which happens to own Mid Valley City too.

Hi! I'm from Malaysia. This is the best time to visit this country because now is the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 in collaboration with Malaysia's 50th Independence Anniversary. I'd say the best places to visit are:
Genting Highlands, Pahang
Awana, Porto Malai, Langkawi
Hotels along the east coast ( do not visit during monsson season)
Port Dickson resorts, Negri Sembilan
My favourite is Genting Highlands. It's a Theme Park located on a mountain called Genting Sempah. You can get there via the genting Sempah-Kuala Lumpur highway or via the Genting Skyway (fastest in South east asia and longest in asia).
Hope i helped!

I would go for Melia Hotel: http://www.solmelia.com/
*It’s not too expensive and it’s very near all the shopping attractions. It’s also near the monorail
Shopping mall which is around the hotel is: Time Square, Sg Wang, Lot 10, Star Hill, Bukit Bintang.
Regards,
Yoke
** Lastly you can take a taxi to KLCC to shop as well :)

why just go to ONE place.
My suggestion is go to KL and Penang. They have MALLS! and prices are also much cheaper!
:D
if in Penang, i would say that you should stay in either the Rasa Sayang resort, or ANY of the hotels around there.REMEMBER TO visit the new Queensbay while you are there OK!
In KL!, i STRONGLY reccomend. Cititel Mid Valley, it takes you 2 minutes to get to Mid Valley. =)

Avoid Bukit Bintang, Sungei Wang and Lot 10 if you possibly can. I was robbed right by Sungei Wang at Jalan Bukit Bintang. And to think, police station is right by the corner which I found very useless. Worst, I was not able to recover my passport.
