Craters are caused by impacts. In the case of Earth or the moon, those come from meteors (bits of rock from outer space) crashing into the surface. The size of the crater will vary depending on the size of the meteor, the speed it's travelling, and maybe the type of rock/soil in the area it hits.

Craters are caused by volcanoes and impacts.

Up until Apollo astronauts went to the moon it was considered that the craters on the moon were mostly volcanic. This was proved to be wrong. They are all the result of impacts.

Earth would have even more craters, but over hundreds of millions of years most have been obliterated by erosion and more importantly, tectonic movements, where the crust of the Earth is recycled.

craters are caused when soemthing makes it through the atmosphere in a big enough peice to hit the surface of the earth. the bigger the piece, the larger the crater. the yucatan peninsula in the gulf o mexico is an example of a pre-historic impact site(supposedly).
