He changed it so that people would associate him with his father and his brother Emelio went with the original name. I think the're dad Martin had to do it to seem whiter cuz at the time he was starting his career, latino actors were looked down on.

He chose to take his dad's stage name (Martin Sheen). Estevez is their family name, which his brothers, Emilio and Ramon kept along with sister, Renee.
