A sponge and pail of hot water will scrub off the old glue. A putty knife/scraper may help where it's thick. It took us a weekend to clean ours off in our kitchen/dining area.. Keep changing the water as needed. A good primer applied after removal helps to prepare the surface for the next step. We painted and went with a small floral border after our removal.

You have to get it off, whether you re-paper or paint. Fabric softener and water works great. As far as what color, no one in their right mind is going to tell you what color YOU should paint. You own the house. YOU live in it, and YOU pay the taxes. Not some stranger at Yahoo. Paint whatever color you like. Buy a shower curtain you love, and go from there.
