I have an interview tomorrow with a gentleman who sales Aflac Insurance. He said they are hiring. What can you tell me about this job?

I can't tell you specifically about the position for which you are interviewing, but most insurance agents work on straight commission, a draw against commission, or a base salary with commission or bonus. Some insurance companies have a training period where you are paid a base salary for anywhere from a few weeks to several months until you begin to build your business. If you work on straight commission, then you will be paid only on what you sell. Most pay weekly or monthly. You can make good money or not, depending on how hard and smart you work. There will be soft times, and you should prepare by setting money aside to see you through. Commission salesmen are among the highest paid in the world. If you sell insurance, you will need a license.

It is cold calling on businesses. Really hard to make money if you don't have prior soliciting skills. You are going into business for yourself and have to be self-supporting for quite awhile. It could take months to start getting commissions.

I would rather see you start with a sales position that includes salary. Check with Yellow Pages advertising sales or newspaper display advertising. You will get comfortable working with business owners. You can join Aflac anytime, maybe even work them together.

Best of luck
