Well, it may not be illegal, but it's not a good deal. According to an article I read (some parenting magazine--can't remember which one cause I was reading it in a doctor's office) mostly they just refer you to other survey sites which you could join for free on your own without paying their fee. (I don't know what site or sites the author signed up with, but in a years time she barely made back the fee she paid).
From my experience, a reasonable amount to expect from surveys is $15 to $40 a month, which will vary depending on how many surveys you qualify for. Sure, if you qualified for every single paid survey that was out there, you might be able to make $300 a day (even then I doubt that much...maybe $300 a month). But you wont. Companies are looking for people from certain demographics to take surveys, and you won't always be in that demographic.
If you are still interested, I've listed most of sites I've actually been paid through here (all are free to sign up with):

And you can find tips on how to avoid scams here:

survey.com this is merely a trap to get YOU to buy exactly what you are surveying. Yea, you take surveys (I've done it) but the payback for your time ends up to be about $3 per hour...at best.
Sell mirco fiber towels...
Your target customers would be Home cleaners, Janitors, Churches wishing to do a fundraiser, Car detail shops.
Some of my customers gave a sample away and then those folks ended up buying over and over again..
Buy them in Bulk for less than $2.50 ea and resell for $5 or $6 ea
We package ours 2 per package and sell for $10...
---(You can sell more for less effort this way.)
You could even create a free web-site at Yahoo.com to promote.
Free business cards on Vistaprint.com
You can buy as little as 5 cloths to try it out...very low start-up just to see if you will enjoy it. If not, use the 5 for yourself...they work great.

Yes it is a scam. If you want to go and have free surveys and work from home with it by getting paid to fill in each survey then send me an email and I will refer you. Free.

I think that they are one of the legit home survey companies out there. I haven't done anything with them but I remember getting an email from a top marketer stating something to that fact. So there you have my input.

There are some legitimate survey sites such as greenfieldonline.com which are free. That is a much safer way to start doing surveys. You might find that you hate their dumb questions.
