Hi, I think for short gateway - a hassle free - no traffic jam - and ideal vacation for family. Nothing compare to Kuching. Hotel rates are so much cheaper there as compare to other places, for example in a 5 star rated hotel such as Merdeka Palace, you can get suites as cheap as RM300 for 2-rooms, RM380++ for 3-rooms.

Don't like museum and anything related to it. Then go nature. Plenty of choices - either going to Matang National Park, or hike up the Santubong mountain, better still just head off to some of the islands, or Bako National for wild life sight-seeing.

Tired of doing that, then board a romantic river cruise plying the scenic Sarawak river in the afternoon, or simply shop around for souvenirs such as "Tikar Sarawak", Pua Kumbu, and Orang Ulu handicraft called "ajat". Sarawak is the most plural state in Malaysia with at least 37 known ethnics some 40 different dialect spoken by her people. So you've variety of choices.

Visit real "rumah panjang" or longhouse to experience Sarawak natives hospitality. It just 30 minutes away from Kuching - the cleanest city in the world.

Food are cheap. For family dinner of 5 pax you will only pay RM100++ at Carpark Food Court, with endless choices of local delicacies. Trying the "miding belacan" - you can't find this delicious fern leaf cook with "belacan" anywhere else in Malaysia.

how about Kuantan? cos my dad is also like urs, who doesnt favour shopping or those museum stuff.. i was at Kuantan last Dec for 4 days 3 nights.. we spent almost everyday at Telok Chempedak Beach, where we can just look at sea waves, play with sand (kids would like that), pick seashells, fly a kite, sometimes juz sit there to enjoy the sea breeze.. there's a 24-hours McDonalds over there and some eateries as well.. especially over weekends, the beach would get crowded until the wee hours.. and we are planning to go there again during this June holidays..

I WOULD SAY..

one of the islands.

SINCE I AM A PENANGITE, i would say Penang. I mean. you get good food. The place is not as modern as KL. Still with some essense of Malaysia. and.. the same time. Not as backwards as some of the other states. People generally are nice.

TONNES OF ATTRACTION.

and moreover, why stop there? take a 2 hour van ride to Thailand as well. =)

Try hilltop resorts... And a gentle reminder since you mentioned that you have a toddler, check with the hotel if they have water heater...
