Hello, first things , i am running a laptop with windows xp pro.
i have Windows live care and Ad-Aware SE pro
ok, heres the problem. Whenever i run a scan with either of these two programs, they get stopped on a file on my computer and it restarts my desktop screen and closes everything. I also have tried to locate the file itself , but when i get near the folder it resets the desktop and closes everything. it wont let me finish a complete scan. I have also tried scanning and locating the file while my computer was in safe mode. . I dont know what else to do , so i thank u if u can help me.

1st, don't waste your time with AVG, it is not the best. Stay away from anything that is free. There is a reason why they free. They are not good.
2nd, You need some of the best software out there. Norton Systemworks is very good. That's the only good software from Norton. Don't get Internet security, its not that great. Now the best software you should get is Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. It blocks over 170,000 threats. No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.
3rd, after you install and update the software, since its in your system you will have to turn off system restore and then go into safe mode and run the scan and eliminate the virus. then after removal, reboot and turn system restore back on.
4th, any probs after you do all this, send me an e-mail

Man that's a tough one. I've battled some nasties. See if you can get an on-line scan completed from ca.com, panda, or others. Microsoft security partners has a bunch of free trials. Spybot Search & destroy might also be able to nail it. Last trick would be to place it into a desktop PC as a slave (buy the converter at newegg or wherever) and do the virus scan with fully updated defintions. Good luck.

Download this free antivirus app called AVG from http://free.grisoft.com. Run a scan in regular mode (normal Windows). Then run a scan in safe mode. This is good AV software. You could try using msconfig to disable all startup items and run a scan after it reboots. Go to Start | Run and type in "msconfig", without the "" and hit ok. Click on the Start Up tab and disable everything button. Reboot as instructed, then run the scan.

If you want, you can try system restore, and restore to the day before the problem began, but I find that seldom works...however if you are going to do that...you must do it first.
Otherwise, go to start/programs/accessories/ system tools/system restore and turn system restore off, as virus's will often hide there, and reinstall once cleaned from the c drive.
Next, go to safe mode and choose the safe mode with networking option.
Click yes at the prompt, and log in as administrator
Go to http://www.bitdefender.com and do an online scan. It will automatically delete the infected file, and take note of the virus(s) it finds.(It cannot mess with your anti virus program, as it is not installed in your computer.) You may have to go to symantec, support and tools if it could not clean the file...that is where you will need the virus name. (Rare but it does happen)
When that is done, update your virus protection and run your scan with that.
You may want to turn system restore back on.
If it worked, I suggest you back your important documents, pictures and such to disk, as experience has taught me, the best way to get rid of virus's is a complete computer rebuild.
Good Luck
