He gave residents of the battered region a message: "The federal government still knows you exist." He then followed it up with: "In spite of us trying our damndest to forget you."
That's so nice of him to come to the rescue of the victims. It happened in August of 2005, but we need to give him time. The man isn't exactly swift (in any respect).

City and state leaders do not run FEMA. Unless of course you have some special information about disaster programs in New Orleans and/or LA? I'd love to hear about it.

I live in FL too. Which state and local programs come to our aid anyway?
When the Governor comes and surveys the hurricane torn lands, what does he declare dumbass? FEDERAL disaster. ffs, do not reproduce.

Bush is an asshole. it was definitely FEMA's responsibility thats why they are called "federal emergency management agency" they are supposed to do more than man concentration camps. Bush should have resigned right then he showed he lacks the responsibility and capabilities necessary to be president.

BP, Halliburton and the vendors of the drill (all legally-created companies) have been in charge for the spill. All of those entities would be taken to courtroom and sued for damages. Katrina, a typhoon (something that occurs for sure and is not in any way a criminal entity), brought about the flooding in New Orleans. How does one go approximately suing an act of nature? Now, i'm specific even the frothing-at-the-mouth crowd can see the version.

He should have also followed up with: "Please get a job."
Okay, Johnny, key phrase in your paragraph: "under sea level." Did people really think they could beat Mother Nature forever? Did they think that a hurricane this bad would never hit? Do they really think NO is really going to be there another century?
And before anyone spouts 'you weren't there, you don't understand'. Yeah, I wasn't there, but I live in Louisiana and we had plenty of people come up from down there. Crime skyrocketed. I had friends who were stolen from and almost raped by some of these poor people. Places that had been safe for decades were safe no longer. But for some reason everyone gets mad when you say anything against the people. It's been, what, two years and people are still in hotels? Is there no jobs, at all, anywhere in the US? I know of quite a few in my area. People get thrown out on the street everyday and you know what? Most of them pick themselves up, find another job, and move on. They do the best they can and they take care of themselves. Now, I'm not saying the people didn't need help. They did. I mean, a lot of them lost the few things they had. But it's been two years. They should have done started taking care of themselves again instead of still relying on the government.

More whining I see. First of all, if the state governor declares a Federal disaster, that does mean that Federal aid becomes available. Regardless of how effective it might be. It is NOT the requirement of the Federal government to make up for your losses. It is YOUR place to make up for your losses. All that the Federal government is required to do is to protect you from foreign invasion. Your losses from Karina are your losses, get on with life and take care of your needs yourself. Be a benefit to the country and not a continued burden. It was a bad situation for you and others, and there was a lot of governmental responsibility for the losses incurred, yet not everyone is going to get all that they had back. Take care of yourself, by yourself, it is not the place of the government to make good your losses, except as the law provides for them to do so.

Funny how in the past like the early 1900's when America had an even more devastating hurricane then Katrina no one even asked the government for help. they relied on each other for help. No one asked where FEMA was they just dusted their selves off and got on with life. Oh for the simpler times when people relied on government for what it's real purpose was. When we allow government to be our daddy and rely on it for every skinned knee we have we will be disappointed. Less government lower taxes is what we need. and more self reliance. I know some of you are cussing my answer because we pay a lot of taxes for the government to help us right? hahahaha The bigger we allow government to become the less they are able to help us. But what do I know.

I wish you people would not be so profane and nasty to people like this person.
After all, they are humans and entitled to their opinions also.
The fact that they are low life, lighter then pop corn, drop case bleeding heart Johnny Come Lately, just makes them to be pitied, not reviled. This person was probably shorted on their welfare check today so they can't get drugs and booze for the weekend, so they are having withdrawal.
Well, now let's see what kind of response this gets.

There they sit, with palms upturned, waiting for "Big Brother" to bail them out. Get rid of all the crime, put the people to work to build themselves up. The Government did not cause the problem and the Government is only very partially in a position to help those who will, or can not, help themselves. Bunch of deadbeats need to get up off their welfare butts and get to work. And that starts with the deadbeat Mayor and Governor.

then, move to a hurricane area - i'm in florida - and get a clue. it is the responsibility of the people first and the STATE & LOCAL gov't first. UNLESS THEY ACT -the feds do NOT and will not step in. mayor nagyn was told over and over -- delcare a state of emergency DAYS before and he would not listen.
wake up and realize your life is what YOU MAKE IT - not what hands outs you can get make it!
