Nijo Castle is in Kyoto and where the Shogun gave up their power.

Ishigaki and Taketomi islands are a part of Okinawa. They are extremely beautiful and not crowded or commercialized. Taketomi island has only a handful a cars on the island. It just got electricity about 25 years ago. It is known in Japan for having star-shaped sand (from the breaking coral reef).

Around the beginning of the year they have a custom of throwning beans to ward off bad and evil spirits and to bring luck and happiness in for the new year.

Hmm. Well...

- They have a style of food called "getamono" that is unbelievably unique...dishes consist of things like still-beating frogs heart, sake mixed with frog's blood, turtle leg (and soup), cold raw horse meat, potentially lethal poisonous organs of the blowfish (fugu), etc... incredible stuff.

- As being crowded enough, only about 12% of the land of Japan is able to be farmed and only around 25% of the land is suitable for residential housing and commercial developement...seriously limited space.

- There are 3 particular places in Japan known as the "3 Most Beautiful Views of Japan". One of those places, in order to se the view, you have to hike up to an outlook area and stand on your head, on a bench. This puts the "view" into the right perspective.

- One of the lowest crime rates in the world (particularly stunning in Tokyo) but one of the highest suicide rates in the world too.

Hope that helps!
