I have a laptop and it is running ridiculously slow. It's less than 3 years old and last month it was running just as fast as ever. I even defragmented and compressed files and its still frustratingly slow. What els can I do to help speed it up?

You can try out the followings if you have not already done yet:
1. defragment your registry using Advanced System Organizer software (30 day trial version available to download from cnet). You can clean up some disk space as well. This program does better jobs than windows discleaner.

2. Check your page file size and if necessary increase that.

3. Check number of processes that is running on your machine. See whether you really need all of them. If you use xp, you can go to the msconfig (type than on run) and uncheck the processes that you don't need. check out the link

C:\documents and settings\your profile folder name, open the folder cookies and delete all that is in there.
Menu Bar - TOOLS - folder options - View
Click on show system files
Check show hidden system files
Click APPLY, OK
open folder Local Settings, delete all files in TEMP folder, delete all files in the Temp Internet Files folder, delete all files in the RECENT folder.
go back to C: Open WINDOWS folder, look for the folder with the name TEMP. Delete as many files as the system will allow!

Reboot your system after emptying the Recycle Bin.

Compression slows your system down because decompression has to take place before the data can be used, then it has to be compressed again.

the compressed files could be slowing it down some, other things to check for are background process's right click task bar
click task manager and see whats running and how much ram is being used, you may have some programs worked themselves into startup and eating up your ram.
I would definatley do a spyware and virus check also, they tend to take up alot of your cpu and ram
