It's not that I don't understand it, I probably do, I just can't sit still long enough to think about.
And it's not like I have anything better to do.

First of all you need to turn of any and all distractions like your cell phone, computer, tv, radio and anything else that distracts you. Go somewhere quiet where you know you won't be bothered. Second of all you need to put yourself in that mind set that you are going to do homework. Third, take periodic breaks. When you study for too long your brain gets tired. You don;t grasp what you're doing and you lose focus. You end up getting confused, you don't understand things that you would normally understand and you get sidetracked because your mind starts to wander. Also, if your school offers after school tutoring or even tutoring before schhol it would be best for you to take your homework and work on it there where you can get extra help and you know you won't be distracted because there will be teachers there.

Could be that you are just looking at the words. Instead, read the lesson out loud. Act it out.

Most homework involves using only your eyes (visual learning)-though most folks do learn this way, a sizable number learn best by listening to things (I'm that way myself). When I need to memorize something, I start singing it--make a tune and the whole thing. Sometimes I make it rhyme with something silly -- like this song I made up about the tundra:

Tundra, tundra, it is very cold
Tundra, tundra, it is very old
Very few trees
I'm freezing in my knees
Tundra, on you I am not sold!

(Stupid, I know--but I made up the song and acted it out with a group of special ed high school kids over 10 years ago, and I still remember the silly thing--and all the kids passed their vocabulary tests, too!)

Next, walk around. Make movements to describe something--if it is math, actually use objects to show the concept, or "write" angles of triangles on your wall, pretending you're writing with a laser.

What you are doing here is using different senses to help you learn. If you have to do something visual, like make an outline of the important facts about Ecuador, make an outline--in color. Make all facts about history red; about geography yellow; government blue--get the idea?

Take a break and maybe get up and walk around. Grab a quick snack, but keep it healthy. Grapes help direct attention. Then when you go back, make sure that the tv's off, you're not listening to music, and you're logged off of the internet or at least off facebook, myspace, and AIM or any other form of distracting communication. Promise yourself time to visit these sites or to watch your favorite tv show after you finish for reward.

Get rid of all distractions (especially the internet and television). Work on homework for half an hour, and then take a break for 10-15 minutes so that you keep your mind refreshed. Continue working and taking short breaks for as long as it takes to finish your homework.

Well for starters get off the computer!! And go in a quiet room and stare at your homework. And if staring at it doesn't finish it, then maybe you should actually try doing it!!

Lack of discipline and commitment. Why aren't your parents getting on you about this? They may be a pain, but they should be on this. In the end, only YOU can motivate yourself to get it done. If you can't get yourself to do what you KNOW you need to do, how do you think you are going to succeed later in life? I hope you will talk with your parents about this... But in the end it's all about YOU
