Im an Ontario highschool student seeking to go to Med school sometime, and i heard that Mcgill had a MED-P program which is a pre-med program for highshcool students. unfortunately, it is only for quebec residents and i am an ontario resident.

Are there any canadian or u.s. universities that provide pre-med programs for highschool students to apply directly because i woudl like to guarantee myself entering into a med program asap instead of taking sciences for 3-4 years and applying then.

Thanks for all the info.

Here is a list from the "SchoolFinder" website, of institutions with specific "pre-med" programs:

If you look at the admissions information for the Med schools in the USA, you'll see that many of them have an average age for entering students of 24 or 25. Younger kids are just not ready for medical studies. And the few programs in the USA for kids to enter 7 year combined BS/MD programs are extremely competitive... the local program only takes about 13 out of 1300 well qualified applicants. You have to show that you are dramatically more mature and stable than other kids your age.

You really need the time in college to study the pre req courses for med school because they are hard and you need to know the material really well. You have to take the MCAT tests, and those are very difficult. Very, very few students are capable of handling that material without plenty of time to work on it.

Also, the med schools want you to show that you are truly committed to life as a physician. You do that by volunteering for several years at medical facilities.

All in all, I dont think too many people agree that med programs are a good place for teenagers.

Most applicants we see for med school (Toronto) have a BSc in one of the biological sciences....some have an MSc (because they have not been accepted and have opted to take an MSc to help their cause).....it really doesn't matter WHERE you get your BSc (provided it is from an accredited university)....but the major(s) IN the BSc...and your marks IN them ARE of great importance.

Your Guidance councilor could probably help you there.
