My son is wanting to go live his dad now and instead of having to to court my ex-husband and I decided maybe we could do this on our own. So I am wondering how do they base the amount that you need to pay.

it is based on your ex's salary and your salary; how many bills you have, it's a long form you can find on line for your state to calculate the amount; if you guys do this without going to court, make sure you keep copies of any checks you give him, in the event he gets mad down the road; note them with child support in the memo line; also, since he won't be paying you child support, you will have to go to court if he is paying you through the courts and they will go after him when there are no payments coming in.
