No because people will continue to be racist in their actions. Racist words are just the symptom, not the problem.

Stopping people saying what they believe, no matter how appalling it may be to some, is the first step to stopping people from freedom of thought and ideas. Political correctness is already bad enough in Europe, but going further and stopping freedom of speech would destroy democracy. Millions of people have died for our freedom, we can't give up are freedom of expression. Everybody should be heard if we are to solve racism, hiding it under the carpet is not the answer.

Eliminating free speech won't stop racism. What a mis-guided idea.
People can be racist in their personal perspective if they elect to. Discriminating because of race is illegal.
Telling someone they can't use certain words won't stop racism or discrimination.

Scott, a couple answers up..... should the "white man" be discriminated against for taking over the country when Native Americans were the only ones here?
To answer the question, no. Tolerance should be taught to everyone living here, but freedom of speech should never be taken away.

most people dont even know the definition of racism. i've heard that if you talk bad about a homosexual, that is racist. if you talk bad about a fat person, that is racist. if you talk bad about someone that has nasty BO, that is racist. Basically, the definition of racism has been hi-jacked by every group in the US, now it really has lost its true meaning. Who hasn't been called a racist? Who has been called a racist fairly though? It is like calling someone a Nazi. I swear I hear on tv someone call another person Hitler or a Nazi once a week. It is sad. Racism is just a term now, it has little appreciation for the gravity of what it once was so it would only be used to eliminate all unwanted speech.

Is it what you say..or what you think that is really important? Which is more scary?
Plus I love how "freedom of speech" champions automatically assume anyone really cares about what they have to say.

Not at all, not letting people spout bigotry makes it easier for them to hide.
Or conversely, in the words of Mark Twain- "It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

if we stop freedom of speech, we will have no way to spread our thoughts either. Plus racists would probably find a way anyways. sad world...

Nah, we should eliminate the closed-minded morons who use "free speech" to justify their stupidity.
