My friend got a new HP Pavilion dv2000 Laptop with Vista installed on it. He gets a "can't copy" message when he tries to back up his Disney DVD (which he CAN backup on his older desktop). Is this "copy protection" a hardware or software issue on his laptop?

Most likely, yes. Common copy protection errors are "can't copy" and "cyclic redundancy check." Your friend will need DVD rippers to make a 1:1 copy of his/her Disney DVD. These rippers will identify and defeat most copy protections, thus allowing you to copy the copy-protected DVD as you would on a normal DVD. However, I will leave the searching of these programs to you.
