I agree. People who are distracted by cell phones, loud music, conversation in the car, food, drink and cigarettes, are the ones most likely to cause accidents. When driving, I keep my eyes on the road, and both hands on the wheel. I watch out for five different cars: the one in back of me, the one in front of me, the ones on either side, and the one that can't be seen, and seems to suddenly appear out of nowhere -- that's the most dangerous one! And I'm not saying I'm the world's best driver, either, because sometimes I'm overly cautious. But distracted drivers are extremely dangerous because they're not concentrating on what they're supposed to be doing, which is driving -- period! Every day I see them slurping coffee (or other beverages which might be illegal), smoking, eating a sandwich, putting on makeup, and once saw a guy using his electric shaver and gawking in the rear-view mirror while doing it. There should be a law against these things, just like the seat-belt law in most states. After a couple of stiff fines or a night in jail, these offenders would be less likely to partake of their Big Mac, diet coke, cigarette and put on their mascara or shave while driving. As for cell phones -- definitely worthy of a ticket. The only permissible use of a cell phone in a car is in an emergency, or if the car is not being driven at the time.

This isn't quite true. There's people who do stupid things without holding anything! Or any distractions! They're just dumb sometimes. That's not to say that I'm not dumb sometimes too, but more people are stupid when I'm on the road than the amount of times that I do something stupid. Take today for instance. 2 people pulled out in front of me in less than 50 yards. There was a car about 60 feet in front of me in the left lane and they turned across the right lane to turn right. Then when I was looking at that, a parallel parked car pulled out in front of me, about 20 feet in front of me, so I was distracted by that and came into the left lane to avoid them, then suddenly that first car had decided to U-turn across all the lanes while the parallel parked car and I were about 10 feet away. You'd think self-preservation would make people pay more attention while operating a large dangerous machine... apparently not. But that's no reason to deprive me of my cell phone... I pay more attention when I hold the phone because I know it's dangerous. I'm sure there's others like me. But these people who pull out in front of me (and so many other people) so often should just be run over... we'd be better without them.

Yea, but what can ya do? A lot of people out there don't need a cell phone while driving to be a crappy driver. I think most can drive perfectly fine while on a cell phone but when crappy drivers (who can't drive in the first place) try to do it, they get in accidents and ruin things for the good drivers. Soon it'll be illegal and that would suq!!

A cigarette is as much a distraction as changing the radio station. Are you already gearing up to ban smoking in personal cars, too?? By comparing it to cell phones? Give me a break!

I think because cell phones have recently emerged that there are some issues. I think when cars got radios the same thing happened.

Banning smoking I am OK with, this is something it is not OK to just drop in your lap.

on highway 401 about a year ago, this guy plows into the rear of a semi and gets killed. They pry him out of his car and there between the steering wheel of the car and his own lifeless body is a magazine.... pornographic, turned to the centrefold.

sad and stupid

good grief. smoking isn't going to kill anyone but the smoker.
why can't people worry more about themselves than other people!!!!!
the people in this world are turning into a bunch of voyers watching what everyone else is doing. we should investigate all the nosey jackasses in the world and see what they are up to when no one is watching!

i beg your pardon, i happen to be a great driver despite the fact that i talk on the phone, eat, change, and put on makeup whenever i'm driving. i've only been in 6 accidents in the last 2 years.
