To say the government monitors the internet and phone calls is too easy an answer. i would go with the fact that most public places these days are monitored via a camera of some sort. Have you noticed how many servalance videos are on youtube or the nightly news? I would have to go with the quickly growing security camera craze. It is not something people think of right away and it is something that just about everyone will realize when you point it out.

Many cities now have video cameras in the downtown area filming people all the time. There are cameras at some intersections that supposedly photo people violating traffic controls. Computers at stores record your every purchase and can provide a history to anyone that checks.
