I think Charles II was Baptized a Catholic on his deathbed but his brother was a devout Catholic.

Oliver Cromwell had used whatever means to impose his power. After his death many leaders saw the his son as not able to impose his will as his father had. And as long as Oliver Cromwell was alive, the Protectorate lived with him, after his death the claims of Charles II were too strong.

Some historians, such as Maurice Ashley, believe that Charles was secretly a Roman Catholic for much of his life like his brother James while others, such Antonia Fraser, disagree. The restoration of the monarchy under Charles II also saw the restoration of a Catholic-influenced court like his father's. All that is known for certain is that he had converted to Roman Catholicism by the time of his death.

Charles II was not Catholic, in fact, for the first few years of his reign, he refused to lift the laws that treated Catholics so badly, see, at this time, Protestantism was quite a new "Subject" so to speak, but, eventually, he married a Catholic, and was torn between the country he ruled and his wife, and he made the country fairer by lifting the laws that surrounded Catholics.
