Don't pay any attention to the posts above--they are all gibberish. There's only one answer to the question--Trade Policy--plain and simple. NAFTA hurt us, but the Republican led repealment of our Tariff legislation is making our manufacturer's compete with the wages of Third World Countries and the Communist Regime in China.

And yes---Bush and Republicans can be interchanged as to whose to blame!! Their overall party platform is designed to keep power in the hands of the few, eliminate social programs, defund government, and eliminate the Middle-Class citizen's ability to climb the social ladder.

We do consume our own products, but most of the things that we consume are less expensive to make in countries like China. That brings the cost down, and consumers like to buy things that are less expensive.

The reason things are more expensive to produce in America is because Americans are want more money for less work. Further, America is moving towards a "post-industrial" era which means, the industrial age in the US is ending and income sources will primarily come from the service industry.

Also, there is a thing called a global economy. If we shut off our borders economically, are economy will become stagnant and we would see a depression much worse than that of the 1920s and 30s.

Simply put they do cost to much.
China has very poor regulations on works..
for example a remote control car may take
an assembly team in America could take 12 workers,
working at 7bucks an hour to assemble these cars.

(With company insurance, heating, electricy, and the like all adding to the final cost of the product put out.)

Where as a sweat shop in china can pay the worker 3 cents per car put together.

Don't you recall the nike/china sweat shop issue in the early/mid 90's?

Nikes litterly costed pennies to be manufactured and sold for more than any other shoe at the time. Pure profit, and that my friend is what Americas all about. Money.

We do not consume our own products because much of what used to be made in our country has been out-sourced to other countries & "American made" is becoming a lost word! Try to buy an American made shoe! Yes, you can find some but you will pay over $100 a pair! Who can afford that for kids? The foreign made are always cheaper, so that is why you pay so much for American made, they sell less & must charge more to stay in business.
Even in the food industry, you will find that much is grown in foreign countries, even canned there!

American to make a pair of boots would cost $100 dollars because a American worker would want $10.00 an hour to produce boots, and health insurance, and add in workers comp costs, FICA taxes it not ecomically feasible for a company like Nike to make shoes even in Mexico because of wage rates. China workers are gettting pricey now so they have to move shoe production to Vietnam because of wages. China in the next 20 years economy will grow to the point that wages are 5 to 6 dollars an hour and they will be likely having to move to higher end goods to produce, and towards a service economy that is already present in the Untied States. America wanted to put up import traiffs on goods prices would raise on comsumer goods, and Americans would lose purchasing power overall. Great Depression did occur because of Smooth Hartley act of 1930s that turned a deep recession into a depression. America will start to produce Green Collar workers to build renewable energy planets, and higher end products in the next 20 years. The workers that are blue collar assembly line workers will work on products that are renewable energy source. Some products will always be locally produced because of shipping, and productity effiecency make up for the cheaper costs. It takes ten Chinese workers to build basic parts on a car, but American assembly line workers will control robots to do that. Open trade is always better for the worker in the long term.

Our factory owners closed up here and moved production to China.
A washing machine used to cost 200 bucks to make and sold for 400 bucks. Now it costs 90 bucks to make and he can sell it for 390 bucks. A third more profit and no buildings, parking lots, or those pesky American workers. It's still an American brand washing machine. American consumers don't know the difference, they only speak Spanish.

i might say China , or possibly even India..its something like each and every 10 minutes China opens a sparkling plant of a few variety, to bypass their economic equipment alongside. This even however might not be good for something of the international with the completed international Warming disaster that is going to take place, or is occurring.

Everything is made in China, that's why. Look at your shirt right now, look at your shoes, look at your clock, look at your forehead.

The only thing not made in China are stuff with the name "Made in "Insert Country Name"
