I'd have to say Murtagh. I just love him! He's dark and mysterious, with a hint of evil there. I love that! More than that, though, Murtagh is more human than Eragon to me. Eragon's the 'do-no-wrong' good guy who can never fail. Murtagh on the other hand has been through hardships that we all have been through. He's suffered to live the life that he has, and he's fought to survive. To me, that's more than what Eragon's done, seeing as how Eragon's always had someone there to help him out, and to show him the way. Murtagh's struggled on alone. I just love him! I like Eragon too, though, but Murtagh's awesome!

I don't understand why you say Murtagh. He is the son of Morzan, who wishes to shed his heritage due to the atrocities which his father commited, who then accepts conscription into the forces of the man devil who coerced his father into evil. (Sorry for the run-on sentence) Eragon offers him a chance to leave his evil ways which Murtagh has previously agreed would be wicked, and Murtagh is so selfish that he turns Eragon down. Now to answer your question, I do find Eragon the better man because he tries to work thorugh his problems. However, I don't like how New Agey and vegetarian Eragon has become due to his time with the elves, so that could be legitimate reason for prefering Murtagh to Eragon.

okay so i'm going to assume you've read the 2nd book and know that they are brothers. if you want to know an answer based on that then i'd go with eragon. eragon has been through just as hard a time as murtagh. he lost his uncle and blamed himself and then he had to go through all the "trials" to reach the elves and get training. I mean that's not normal. They have both had a hard time. I go for eragon only because he seems like the better one. Murtagh to me, is going to the "dark" side and that puts him in the category of "guy I want to like but can't cuz he's evil"..it's sort of like draco's dad in harry potter, you want to hate him because he's evil but then he seems kinda cool.

I love both of them. I know alot of ppl don't like Murtagh becuase of the Son of Morzan thing but do you remember what we find out at the end of Eldest? (I don't want to spoil it for anyone)
Eragon is the main character so we just know alot more about him then we do Murtagh. Eragon is kind and does have his 'stupid' moments. Me and my friends can easily relate to that. lol.
As for Murtagh I like how he has the mystery thing going and we don't know tons about him. I really do like his character and was sad when we didn't see him though most of book 2.

Eragon, Murtagh only beat eragon because of these reasons:

-when eragon is battling murtagh, eragon has just fought a battle.
-Murtagh know the way eragon fights

I THINK:
-If it was a fair duel, eragon will win because eragon has his gifts from the dragons
