Does your Internet provider provide any virus program for you? If not you will need to buy one, it is very important to have a virus checker. I use pc-cillan, believe Norton is good and several others are good. Just keep in mind that no checker will catch all virus all the time. The only program you do not want is McAfee as that program is at the bottom of all lists for protection.

Hi... Would you give away your BMW car for free? Or would you give away your Piano that you no longer need? Which one would you give away?
Ok. So, we know by now that nothing free is good, but of course can be helpful.
There is an Anti virus protection called AVG and another one called McAfee... AVG is for free and McAfee cost $49
What is the difference? You wouldn't even ask that question because one is free and one costs.
Ok. So is AVG better than McAfee? SMH. How would a free thing be better than somethingthat costs?
Ok, so why AVG is free and not McAfee? The answer is: AVG protections your computer 20% while McAfee protects your computer 98%.
So, why does AVG only protect my computer 20%? The answer is: Because it is FREE.
So why does McAfee protect my computer 98%? Answer is: Because you PAY for the MOST prowerful security code to protect your computer.
Which one of these protection is reliable? Well, I won't tell you which one if you still can't get the hint.

I use AVG antivirus, its free, and simple to use, you can download it from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5. Simply download the software and save the file to the desktop. Once its downloaded double click on the file you just downloaded and run the install program. It will automatically install itself, and will ask you if you would like to run a scan after it installs, select yes, it will also update itself everytime you connect to the internet and automatically update. If you have further questions feel free to email me at wsevier@yahoo.com.

People are suggesting AVG out of personal experience. They are cautious that's all.Look at the av-comparatives.org tests, virus.gr tests.Where does avg stand?I would either suggest avast home or active virus shield.(based on kaspersky av)
They are better than avg

P.S Who says McAfee provides 98%?
