I have an 88 olds eighty eight series with a 3800 engine and for the past week it has been hesitant to start. Usualy it starts as fast as the key turning to the ignition spot but lately it has had to turn over a few extra seconds. Tonight I was out for about 1/2 hour and when I pulled up to a stop it stalled for no reason. The engine sounds fine, no more vibration than normal, and it started after it stalled. It has hasn't given any codes either. What would you suspect to be the problem?

i got a 1988 olds delta 88,with a 3800 engine in it too,and mine did that, and i had to change the throttle position sensor and the idle air control.yours sounds just like mine did, before i changed those things.i did have 1 mech.tell me that it could be the egr valve going bad,but i never changed that, but i got 1,so i might change it too.

its most likely not a tune up,or filters, and definitely not a timing belt. Your cause is most likely a failing crankshaft sensor.. I changed tons of these back in the 80s while working for oldsmobile

Check :

Air Filter
PCV Valve
Fuel Filter - especially if it hasn't been changed in a while, or if you have bought gas in a place different than where you normally shop... Sometimes you get trashy gas that will plug the filter...

probably the fuel filter mine was plugged on my 1998 chevy suburban and it caused to much back pressure on the fuel pump and it over heated and seized up on me and then i had to pay almost 400 $ for a new one. But i went about 170,000 on the same filter so it did it's job though.
