Cal Ripken Jr.

I don't even have to bring up the streak, and I would still vote him the best if he had taken a few more days off inbetween.

He could hit for power and average, his glove was like a black hole and had very few errors in his career, and he was one of the most powerful on field leaders of all time.I have never seen anyone command the level of respect from his team and lead them with just a few easy words.

I won't profess to know who the greatest of all time is, but I do believe the best in the past 15 years has been Omar Vizquel. He was unbelievable with the Cleveland Indians, making plays backwards, upside down and while flipping through the air. When paired with Robbie Alomar, it didn't matter to me if the Tribe won or lost because I had so much fun watching them play. Compare Omar's stats as a SHORTSTOP to any one playing today and he is as good, if not better than all of them. With 11 Gold Gloves, second only to Ozzie Smith, Vizquel, who has led all Major League shortstops in fielding percentage six times, set a baseball mark and Giants franchise record with a .993 mark in 2006 with only four errors in 599 total chances, the sixth-best total by a shortstop in history.

Ozzie Smith - Great range and quickness, sure hands, 13 Gold Glove Awards in a row. No doubt he was the best ever at playing the shortstop position. Might just be the best defensive position player ever.

Derek Jeter is probably the best shortstop of all time. The best defensive shortstop is hands down Ozzie Smith.

Bobby Omer.
We took a trip to Quincy, IL for a baseball tournament 23 years ago. Myself, Bobby and Kevin Clancy went out for the evening because we heard there was a porno movie theater in town. When we went inside to purchase our tickets the gentleman, and I use the term loosely, asked for our ID's. Bobby stepped up and explained that he was, in fact, 18 years old, but that me and Kevin weren't. The guy tells him he will sell Bobby the three tickets and Bobby can go through the theater and let Kevin and me into the movie via the back alley exit door.
I saw my first porno movie in a theater in Quincy, IL at the ripe ol' age of 14. That's why Bobby Omer is the greatest shortstop of all time.

Love him or hate him, it's Cal Ripken. The streak notwithstanding, he did put up very good numbers- maybe not quite as good as Ernie Banks, but hit for better average than Banks and fielded the position better.

Unless you count Ernie Banks' first 8 or 9 years before going to first, it has to be Omar Vizquel.

Vizquel has the best defencive stats-and the best all time fielding %.

It's tough to go against Cal Ripken Jr.

If we are talking about all around(defense and Offense) which obviously you are then the only answer can be Arod. Pretty sad how Jeter doesnt let the best SS in the history of the game play SS.

Jeter. Can hit, field, and has 4 WS rings. Is all u can ask 4 and more out of a SS. Best ever, period. Honus Wagner is second.
