Hi. To solve these problems, always jot down what you know, and preferably in the form of an equation. So what do we know?

First, we know that the value of movie and concert tickets is equal to $28:

m + c=$28

But weknow that the movie ticket ("m") is 1/3 of the concert ticket ("c"), or:

m=1/3c

We have two equations with two unknowns. Now all we do is plug in the value of m as 1/3c:

1/3c + c=$28

which is

4/3c=$28
4c=28*3

c=$21

So a concert ticket is $21, and 1/3 of that, $7, is the cost of a movie ticket. Voila!

Since both tickets cost $28 total, the movie ticket costs $7, while the concert ticket costs $21...

If Sam spent $28 dollars on tickets and a movie ticket is 1/3 the price of a concert ticket, then you know that 1/4 of $28 is 7 dollars, the price of a movie ticket, and since 7 is 1/3 of 21, and 21+7=28, you know that the cost of a movie ticket is $7 and a concert ticket is $21.

X = cost of movie tickets
3X= cost of concert tickets
X + 3X =$28 (cost of both)
4X=28,
X=$7 movie tickets
3X or 3(7) = $21 concert tickets
7 = 1/3 of 21

Call m the cost of movie tickets and c the cost of concert tickets. m+c=28 and c=3*m. Now substitute 3m in for c in the first equation:

m+3m=28
4m=28
m=7. So the cost of movie tickets is $7 and then the cost of concert tickets is $21.

let x = price of a movie ticket
then 3x = price of a concert ticket (movie tickets are 1/3 the cost of concert ticket is the same as saying concert tickets are 3 times as much as movie tickets)

x+3x = 28
4x=28
x=7

movie ticket = $7
concert ticket = $21

X = concert ticket
1/3X = movie ticket
$28 = total cost

X + 1/3X = 28
4/3X = 28

4X = 28 * 3
4X = 84
X = 84/4
X = 21

Concert ticket costs $21
