my mom owns a 1998 accord v-6. I drive it alot when I visit her. It has only 60,000 miles on it. I am not impressed with it. She spends alot of money keeping it maintained. Last time it cost her $1,300.00. air conditioner, brakes and some other things. It gets about 24-27 mpg on the highway. It does not have very much pep for a v-6.

Background on mine - Bought mine from my step-brother, who bought it new. '99 EX V6 Coupe. Currently 107K miles, did the timing service last year when the dealership had the special for $459 (normally $700-800, depending on dealership). Oil changed every 3 - 4k with synthetic blend.

I LOVE my car! It's a decently balanced ride, not too stiff, but can still feel the road. INCREDIBLE acceleration from a stop and when passing is needed. Granted, you pay for that performance with the mileage, but I don't mind that sacrifice. This car is great on corners with stock suspension.

The mileage on mine is about 21mpg, usually. Of course, I do high-rev when passing or generally in a hurry, but after testing a whole tank's worth with "grandma driving" and getting only about 1-2 mpg better, I'll go with gunning it when I feel like it. I only use regular gas. Premium does nothing to improve performance on this motor. I'm going on personal experience and MULTIPLE mechanics, both Honda and general shops, stating that with today's gas additives, premium doesn't "clean out" anything more than regular. It was suggested to use a bottle of fuel system treatment or fuel injector cleaner (not the cheap kind, spend an extra buck or two for a reputable brand) every once in a while to help cleanse and treat the fuel system. Just don't do it too often. If you have a sluggish motor or think you have clogged injectors, it's too late for an over the counter treatment, usually.

Of the 3 trips I've taken in it, the mileage was about 27-29mpg.

I've been lucky to only have regular maintenance needed on mine (knock on wood), but I have looked into costs for various parts, in case of future need of repairs, and I've found that they are generally in the middle to low range for cost.

Advice - DO THE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE! Most people think the oil change is needed, but ignore other maintenance until something doesn't work right. Do you want to change the fuel filter, air filter, coolant and things like that when all seems fine? No, but you have to do it. Just as with any car, preventative is the best maintenance.

I'm currently getting ready to put NGK Iridium plugs in. It may improve performance, it may not, but NGK are the OEM plugs and the Iridium are supposed to be the best. Also about to add a K&N filter, should've long ago. I've been told recently that the cold air intake that's got the filter still under the hood really doesn't help, since it's still getting hot air. I was told, though, that it poses a problem if it ever gets splashed with water. Even with a shield under it, it's still prone to moisture that an enclosed filter isn't.

I highly recommend Michelin tires for the person that isn't changing the wheels or ride highth. Hydroedge are the best and they're 90k mile tires that truly cut through water.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but if it isn't apparent, I love the car and will keep it til it dies. FYI, I just got rid of a 1986 Nissan Maxima a year ago that finally had multiple issues occur (none in the motor) at the same time. The cost of all repairs was twice the blue book value, so I figured it was time to find a new juggernaut. Hopefully this Accord can stand the test of time, like the Maxima.

Hope this info helps!
