When the ipod begins charging the status bar is a green with a black charge symbol in the middle of it. After it has charged, my computer makes a beep noise, and then the ipod screen shows a blinking red circle with a line through it, and words which say: "do not disconnect". Why?

when its just charging, the battery (green sign) will show up. but sometimes it needs to update. the red circle is just telling you not to take your ipod out before the update is finished. if you do, it may corrupt your files and delete all of your settings (trust me...it happened once)

if you need to disconnect your ipod here are a few tips to know when its safe:

look in the top left corner of the screen. if there is a revolving circle, it means that files are being copied on to your ipod. DONT TAKE IT OFF THE CORD IF THATS THERE! if there is no circle in the left hand corner, you are safe to remove it

if you are still nervous about removing the ipod, open itunes and push the little circle with a triangle in it thats on the left and screen with all the names of your playlists. the button will be right by the name of your ipod. its the eject button so after your ipod actually ejects, your ipod screen will go back to normal and you will know when its safe to remove it

=] good luck

This is totally normal. As long as it charges and your media plays, it's okay. However, don't disconnect your IPod until you have stopped it by safely removing your hardware (IPod). It's just like when you remove your usb flash drive from your computer. You safely remove it first. The safely remove hardware icon is located in your task bar by your clock. Looks like a green arrow over a square looking box.
When this happens, your IPod will stop flashing and go back to the menu screen.

It does that because you probably have your i-tunes setting to manually disconnect. So you have to go to your i-pod administrator setting in the i-tunes and change it to automatic disconnect.
Since you have your setting to manual, your i-pod wont disconnect until you tell it to and will continually try to update it thus giving you the red circle status bar.

When you finish charging the battery just go to the taskbar on your computer and click safely remove hardware, when you do that the ipod won't say that anymore.

It is basically so you don't disconnect it before it is done updating I think. I wait until mine is changed and disconnect it with no problems.
