If you run a brand-new 100% cotton garment through the dryer, will it shrink if the garment was not wet?

I've never worn it, I just want to fluff it up before I have to wear it the first time. I know if you wash it, then dry it, it will shrink....but what if you don't wash it first?

It will not shrink if its not wet. I worked in a textile laundry. Usually dryers have a setting that says "air fluff". Try that one if you're hesitant. Its the safest setting.

You can put it in the dryer with a dryer sheet. And the new 100% cottons are usually washable, but, they do indicate you might need to iron it a bit. I'd send it to the cleaners.

If it's not prewahed, the heat from the dryer can shrink it. Try running the dryer on perma press, or low.

Depending on what the garment is, it usually won't affect it -- even if you do run it through the washer. Nearly everything is pre-shrunk these days, and even if it doesn't say, you can usually be safe and assume that it is.
