Toilet tissue works great and they love to play in the tubes also. You don't even need to shred it because they will do that on their own.

Go ahead and use it if it is temporary.. because i don't think shredded white paper is very comfortable to live in.

However...Avoid newspapers and other printed paper as bedding because your hamster may consume the ink when they are tearing up the paper to make a nest. There have also been rising reports regarding the toxicity and dangers of cedar and pine shavings as bedding for hamster's cages. Some of the alleged health problems as a result of regular use include itchy skin and scratching, and even liver problems.

Poor little buddy. =(

Shredded paper is fine for hamsters. A lot of pet stores actually sell bags of recycled paper to use as bedding. If you're concerned about comfort, you could add a layer of plain, white bathroom tissue as well. I breed dwarf hamsters and all of mine love this.

When it comes to shavings, you are right to avoid cedar. Another one to avoid is pine. The aromatic oils in these woods cause skin irritations and respiratory problems in small animals.

I use a mixture of aspen and Carefresh myself, and I give them bathroom tissue for nesting purposes.

I must add that it is not safe to use the "fluffy" bedding that is sold in petstores as nesting material. It is very dangerous and has caused death in many hamsters. It can become stuck in pouches and intestines, and will often wrap around limbs, which will often lead to amputation of the limb.

Shredded white paper is alright, but needs to be changed frequently due to odors. Use aspen, or Carefresh, or Critter fresh for litter, they're better. Never use cedar or pine, they cause respiratory problems. You only need to change then bi-weekly or less if only one hamster, never let it go for more then a month.

Sure, just don't use it all of the time. Or, mix it with the cedar bedding stuff. They like paper towel to shred and make a nest out of it. Not a whole lot, just a little.

i guess you could, but it's not healthy. go to the petstore and get Carefresh pet shavings. DON'T get the wood ones. espcially if its a hamster. those are so bad for them.
