I switched from dial-up to ADSL, and my Internet provider installed a router that sits on my PC. The phone line goes through it to my ethernet card.

OK, first off, you're joking, right? A router is basically what tells your computer to do while connected to the Web, or it tells your computer to do whatsoever. Its purpose is basically to send messages back and forth from your mouse pointer to the tower and ultimately your motherboard, and then back up to your moniter.
