What is the status of the wifi connection?
What happens when you right-click and choose Repair?

Go into the wireless connection properties, cant remember where but then in one of the tabs there'll be an option to let windows manage the connection, as opposed to wifi card/dongle software doing the work.

Do you have any message like:
1- One or more wireless networks have been detected
2- Obtaining an address (and it keeps there)
In the first case you are ok. In the 2nd you might be trying to connect to a safe network - you need a password.
