Colonialism is ALWAYS bad. It kills the feeling of self-esteem in colonized peoples and creates the feeling of inferiority. This inferiority complex causes a lot of damage. No amount of economic help can undo the bad effects of colonialism.

The British did not have any desire to prepare Sierra Leone for independence. They simply didn't care about its future.

British colonial policies in all of their African colonies, such as( the then ) Union of South Africa, Sierra Leone, Rhodesia etc was structured around segregation. Thus the colonial policies excluded local people from any decision making process. The West African states were generally colonised by France which adopted a pro-active "assimilation" policy that included locals in decision making processes.

The British policy on trade was simply to strip its colonies of resources to fuel its industrial revolution. Even its agricultural policies failed and to a large extent destroyed vast tracts of indigenous and fertile lands.

The British left its colonies in a hurry and quickly groomed "friendly" leaders to take power after independence.

The basis for Apartheid in South Africa was the direct result of British colonial policy. This was reflected in all of its colonies - including India.
