Hello Jim; I had traced my family heritage and found out that I was 1/4 cherokee,1/4 Blackfeet,1/4 Scottish and 1/4 Irish... lol what a mixture huh! I looked up my heritage background on the Cherokee's and I will relate some info that I had researched. Hope this helps.
The cherokee tribes of N.America mostly lived in N. Carolina, Georgia(northern) and in Tennessee. Their home/land were the Appalachain Mountains. Now what I understand and have read that most of your Cherokee people lived in log cabins. Made out of logs, mud and grass. They had fireplaces in their cabins for warmth. There only means of transportation was the canoe that they built themselves with hot coal and sharp tools.Cherokee people would grow in their fields corn, squash, beans and sweet potatoes. And fish were there primary source of meat besides trapping other wild meat. Also what I understand each person had their own duties. Such as the men would do the hunting and making the canoes, and building the homes. While the women made the clothing, harvested the crops, cooked the meals and raise the children. The children also had their own duties. The men had their councils and so did the women. Their council was given the name Ghigau which means "Beloved women".The most important ceremony for the Cherokee people was the Green Corn Ceremony. This was celebrated when the corn was "ripe".This marked the ending of the old year and the beginning of the new year. Like most tribes the Cherokee's had their "war chiefs" and their "peace chiefs". The Trail of Tears is well known to the Cherokee people since 17,000.00 or more of men, women and children marched for the Indian Territory thru Tennessee,Kentucky, Southern Illinois and Missouri and 4,000 died on the trip. There are now two bands of Cherokee tribes. There is the Eastern Tribe and the Western tribe. The Eastern tribe is located in Cherokee N. Carolina and the western tribe is located in Oklahoma.
