It sounds like a linkage maladjustment. Park and reverse are next to each other at the top of the movement range. If the selector stick won't mechanically go into park or reverse positions with the engine shut down, it's almost certainly a lingage adjustment that is needed.

I'm not sure what year they started using electronic control for the transmission but my 94 Jag had a problem with rough shifting. I also had a warning light with an unreadable symbol on the dash. I solved it by removing the battery terminal, waiting for a few minutes then replacing it to reset the computer. It now works fine.

Caution: Make sure that you have the code to activate your radio before you do this or you will lock up your radio and render it useless!

Good Luck...

Dodge man is right on, there could be a big problem or a little problem. Get a written estimate with a list of parts needed ... then ... get a second opinion. If they are both the same, it's not likely either one is trying to rip you off. Then find the cheapest price to do the work listed on the estimate (within reason, remember, you get what you pay for!), maybe I should say cheapest price from a reputable source.

Good luck!

i own a repair shop, and if its not slipping or acting up while its being drove its possible that all is wrong with it ,is the shift solenoid, this will keep it from not staying in any gear, and it can be replaced for around 250 bucks parts and labor included, other than that i suggest you take it to a transmission mechanic, and get a hands on opinion on it,they may know a simple cure for this other than rebuilding it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

I think the transmission is almost out or the gears ar messed up check to see if you have fluid and get it checked out by transmission dealer I think it's going to cost you about 3,500 or even more because its an import good luck
also I recommend that you get a new car or trade it in You will waste a lot of money for one problem .then you will notice that it will have a new problem and again u will waste money hope you
buy a new car

does the car shifts good, and runs good on the road?if it does then i would say it probably the shifter cable is stretched.one way you can find out,and thats, take the cable loose from the tranny and put the tranny in park by hand and see if it sits there.then have someone hold the brake and you put it in reverse by hand and see if it stays in.if it works that way, then its the shifter cable.
