what does the x stand for...im looking to buy a bmw...most of the ones i see are bmw i's but what does the x mean

In BMW models, the "x" means that it is all wheel drive.

i.e. A 330i is rear wheel drive, a 330xi is all wheel drive.

Partygirl has it absolutely right. BMW has been using the "x" to designate AWD since at least 1985 (that's the earliest model I've ever seen with it, but it could go back further.)

It denotes all wheel drive. Usually available on the 3 series with their sedan lines.
