The Bible is not always used in court. The court clerk will say, "Raise your right hand and swear after me....." So if there is a Bible, one would have the left hand on it. If a person is left handed, why hassle.

You are usually asked to raise your right hand but there is no law making that mandatory. More importanly you do NOT have to swear on a bible. You can simply swear to tell the truth. If you have another religious book you like to substitute from a widely and generally accepted religion you can do so. The 'swear' is the only thing needed for you to be under oath.

Very few courts still do the "swearing" on the bible. Too many complaints about religion. (how can you swear on a bible if you are athiest, or muslim, etc) They will ask you to raise your right hand and swear to tell the truth.

Your right hand is raised. You do not need to set your hand in the bible, although in Federal Court in could be different. In our court system you raise your right hand and "swear or affirm" to tell the truth.

Most every court no longer even has one swear to the bible because of separation of church and state. But if one did they raise the right and cover the book with the left.
