my english teacher made a couple of people (including me) to stay after class...first she gave us this big lecture on why it's important to participate in class and then she made everyone write a 100 word essay on why it's important to participate in class...is that right??

I'll tell you what you want to hear. No it isn't right. Now that you have heard that, if you would have been participating you wouldn't be asked to do this essay. Just remember that it is your choice to complete the assignment or not. But you have to answer for your actions, if you don't do it-the situation may be worse than if you had done the essay.

They can make you do it, but I don't think participation is really going to affect your growth as a student. I never participated in school, and I did just fine. It is part of your grade in some classes, but it never made my test grades any better to answer a question that I already knew was right.

Yes. You're lucky it was only a hundred words. That's not an essay, it's a paragraph.

Participate in class, you'll learn more.

Definitely... I never understood why we had homework after being at school all day. It's just one of those things that really pay-off down the road. You have a good teacher; try to participate more.

I love your teacher! Our education system would be so much better if we had more like her. You only get out of a class what you are willing to put into it. Participation is vital to a strong learning community. Do more than put in the required seat time--it's worth the effort.

Why do you not participate? You learn more if you read your materials and contribute to the class.

yep.

a teacher can make you write an essay about anything. personally, i wrote an essay once on essays. as long as a teacher can incorporate it into their lesson plans and it has any type of relation to the course being instructed then yes, they can make you do pretty much anything.

Yeah it's right. Just suck it up and do it. 100 words is barely even a paragraph, I don't even see what the big deal is about that.
