I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop that keeps shutting off at random times, sometimes when it's just sitting there, sometimes when I'm using it. No error messages come up and it doesn't go to a blue screen. It just shuts off. I've run a virus scanner, spyware scanner, checkdsk, and memtest86. Any ideas what it might be?

Other info:
- It has a battery.
- There is one pcmcia slot being used by an ethernet card.
- I haven't added any hardware in the past year.

which virus scanner, which spyware scanner??/
Are you sure they are effective enough?
If not virus and spyware, that must be regsitry errors.

I have had a fan collect some dust, and overheating caused shutdowns, but I still got the blue screen.

If you have 2 memory modules, try turning the pc off and removing one, if this doesnt work, swap them and try again. A bad memory module will cause random shutdowns on a pc, I have had this experience with a desktop........

First try cleaning out the fan, could be some buildup in there causing some overheating problems......If your not comfortable taking the laptop apart to clean, take it to your local pc shop, Best Buy has the Geek Squad.....

Good luck, hope its nothing to serious......

If it's not the fan, you may have parasites, Trojan's and/or a Virus. Lavasoft has a wonderful and free adaware program free of bugs. Spybot S&D is also an excellent program as well as AVG.

The site above has tons of information that is very valuable to all of us as well as links to free software that is FREE of bundles adware etc... and he provides information on sites/programs and such that many think are safe and are not. Trust me, I am an Engineer and I use the programs listed above along with others and I have not a problem since.

Well if you have run Spy and Virus scans and they all show no problems then it might be a hardware problem.

This is my “educated guess” but it might be a problem with the battery.

If it is some other kind of hardware problem then you really have no alternative but to go to a repair shop.

Ur laptop maybe overheating.. and or fan inside is failing which is related to why it is overheating in the first place. Long shoot would be the battery itself is dying..correcting one or the other should resolved ur issues. Cheers!
