well if you've ever seen a horse when they get done with a race? they look really scrubby,and if they are not brushed down and and put a blanket on them,there hair gets all matted and unruly,it the same as , she,s been Thur a ringer, she,had a hard life,she,s been used abused, and kicked to the curb!

Messed up, fuggly, like she's had a hard life ... reference is to a leather saddle ... you ride a horse, horse gets sweaty, saddle gets wet with sweat ... you have to dry out the saddle before you store it or it gets totally ruined.
