the stones were transported to the Salisbury Plains from at least two other localities, but no-one really knows by whom or when. Druids are a popular theory but there are many other suggestions, both plausible and otherwise (in reality Stonehenge is almost certainly much older than the druids, but it is believed that the druids made use of the site).
Stonehenge is the most famous example but there are many henges in the Uk and Europe. Ones made of wooden poles are called woodhenges, but these are mostly destroyed through the actions of time and decay.

The larger stones at Stonehenge came from an area about 20 miles away, towards the north-east. The smaller stones came from the far end of Wales, about 140 miles in a straight line, but much longer by any of the routes that could have been used.

I just saw a "Discovery Channel" special on this, for what it is worth. The formations at Stonehenge take the same shape as the buildings recently uncovered by an arcological dig near-by. One can only guess at the purpose of the stones, where they came from and how they were raised.

Nobody knows. I know one thing for sure: the people who carried them over were pretty advanced. If you wanted to lift one up, you'd need advanced technology. Besides, these people are prehistoric, and studies show that the stones were carried from a far distance.

the stones themselves apparently came from southern Wales. The process is lost to history, but many conjecture that water was involved.
